Francisco Xavier Río Barja, tamén coñecido como Francisco Xavier Río Barxa, nado en Lugo o 17 de novembro de 1919[1] e finado en Tenerife o 5 de xaneiro de 2011, foi un xeógrafo e escritor galego, académico da Real Academia Galega.

Traxectoria

Fillo de militar, estudou o bacharelato nos Maristas de Lugo e aprobou as oposicións a Correos, coincidindo coa Guerra Civil española. Durante a contenda, é recrutado como carteiro polo bando nacional. Na posguerra licenciouse en Xeografía e Historia na Universidade de Santiago de Compostela e foi destinado como mestre a Viveiro. Proseguiu a súa carreira profesional ao acceder temporalmente a unha praza de profesor adxunto na universidade compostelá. Nesa época é cando coñece a Ramón Otero Pedrayo e cando escribe a súa tese doutoral, que lla dirixe precisamente o catedrático ourensán.

Posteriormente sacou as oposicións para profesor universitario de Maxisterio e, aínda que o destinan ás illas Canarias, permutará a praza e quedará na Universidade de Santiago, centro de ensinanza ao que quedaría vinculado ata a súa xubilación. Vinculado ao galeguismo histórico a través de Pedrayo e do Instituto de Estudos Galegos Padre Sarmiento, ingresou na Real Academia Galega en 1983 a proposta de Ramón Piñeiro, Manuel Chamoso Lamas e Antón Fraguas cun discurso sobre a interpretación da paisaxe compostelá.

Foi director do Instituto de Estudos Galegos Padre Sarmiento e membro do Consello da Cultura Galega e da Academia das Ciencias de Galicia.

Defensor do nacemento do río Miño no Pedregal de Irimia, marcou quizais o punto de inflexión cara a esta paternidade en detrimento de Fonmiñá[Cómpre referencia].
