A Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal é unha biblioteca localizada en Lisboa, Portugal, que reúne unha ampla colección de documentos e publicacións portugueses. Foi creada o 29 de febreiro de 1796, co nome de Real Biblioteca Pública da Corte, co obxectivo de poñer todos os fondos da Biblioteca Real á disposición de todos os usuarios o máis rapidamente posible, a diferenza da tendencia europea da época, que consistía en restrinxir a consulta os documentos tan só a un público selecto de eruditos. O edificio actual foi inaugurado en 1969, obra de Porfírio Pardal Monteiro. A Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal ten tamén a misión de reunir todas as obras publicadas no territorio portugués, mediante a política de depósito legal, ademais de adquirir obras consideradas especialmente importantes polo seu valor bibliográfico ou cultural.

A Biblioteca está a adaptar os seus fondos ás novas tecnoloxías, co obxectivo de ofrecer unha maior facilidade de acceso aos documentos a través de Internet. De feito, esta biblioteca atópase entre as entidades fundadoras de The European Library.

Colección

Publicacións periódicas

A Biblioteca alberga, ademais do seu catálogo de libros, máis de 50.000 títulos de xornais e outras publicacións periódicas, dos cales 12.000 son títulos portugueses actuais e 240 son estranxeiros tamén en publicación na actualidade. Aínda que a maior parte destes títulos pertencen aos séculos XIX, XX e XXI, tamén se conservan revistas e xornais do século XVII e XVIII, como a Gazeta da Restauração (1640), primeiro xornal portugués, ou a Gazeta de Lisboa (1715). O Açoriano Oriental(1835) e a Revista Militar (1848) son os títulos máis antigos aínda en curso. Entre a prensa estranxeira conservada na Biblioteca, destaca a producida no Brasil e en África (por exemplo, en Macau ou Goa).

A Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal está nestes momentos en proceso de microfilmación dun gran número de publicacións periódicas, especialmente as que proveñen dos séculos XIX e XX, entre as que se atopan O Português ou o Mercúrio Político, a Revolução de Setembro, a Ilustração Portuguesa, o Diário de Notícias, O Século e O Expresso.[1]

Manuscritos

A área de Manuscritos existe, con esta designación, desde 1980, integrada na Divisão de Serviços de Reservados, aínda que unha sección similar existía xa desde a fundación mesma da Biblioteca. Esta Área reúne actualmente seis colecciones de manuscritos, até alcanzar un número total de preto de 15.066 códices e preto de 36.000 manuscritos soltos que abarcan desde o século XII até o XX.

Coleccións patrimoniais e Arquivo

A área do Arquivo Histórico reúne fondos e coleccións constituídas por documentos de arquivo de distintas procedencias, entre o século XI e o XX. Predominan os arquivos persoais e de familia, aínda que tamén se conservan fondos da administración central e local, xudiciais, notariais, eclesiásticos etc. Estes fondos foron reunidos, en gran parte, como consecuencia da disolución das ordes relixiosas en Portugal en 1834, e das que seguiron á implantación da República, así como de compras e doazóns.
