ISO 3166-1

A International Organization for Standardization usa os nomes de países escollidos polas Nacións Unidas, algúns dos cales están en discusión.

O ISO 3166-1 é parte da norma ISO 3166 que propón códigos para nomes de países e dependencias.

É un sistema de dúas letras, usado entre outras cousas para os dominios de Internet.

Os capítulos que derivan deste código son:

  • ISO 3166-2, códigos para subdivisións, tales como, Estados e/ou Provincias;
  • ISO 3166-3, códigos para substituír códigos Alfa-2 obsoletos;
  • ISO 4217, códigos para unidades monetarias;
  • ISO 3166-1 Alfa-3, un sistema de tres letras;
  • ISO 3166-1 Numérico, un sistema numérico de tres díxitos, idéntico ao que foi definido pola División de Estatística das Nacións Unidas (ONU);

Un país ou territorio xeralmente recibe un novo código Alfa se o seu nome se modifica, mentres que se dá un novo código numérico se houber alteración dos límites fronteirizos.
