Bonifatius I was die 42ste pous van die Rooms-Katolieke Kerk.

Biografie

Pous Bonifatius I is gebore as Jocundus of Secundius. Sy geboortedatum en geboorteplek is onbekend. Op 28 Desember 418 volg hy Pous Zosimus op en regeer tot sy dood op 4 September 422. Hy word opgevolg deur Pous Celestinus I. Die naam ‘Bonifatius’ beteken ‘weldoener’.

Pontifikaat

Pous Bonifatius I was een van die twee kandidate om pous te word na die dood van Pous Zosimus. Die ander kandidaat was Eulalius wat later teenpous geword het. Na die dood van Pous Zosimus was daar 'n konflik oor die rigting wat die kerk moet volg. Al twee partye het 'n pous verkies (kronologies eers Teenpous Eulalius en toe Bonifatius) en daar is besluit om keiser Honorius te vra om die finale keuse te maak. Die keiser belê 'n sinode in Ravenna op 8 Februarie 419 en het beide kandidate uit Rome weggestuur tot na die besluit. Teenpous Eulalius het egter na Rome teruggekom teen die keiser se bevel en die keiser het toe Pous Bonifatius as Pous aangestel.

Augustinus het meerdere van sy werke aan Pous Bonifatius opgedra. Bonifatius het ook die Pelagianisme verwerp. Hy het ook keiser Theodosius II van die Oos-Romeinse Ryk oorgehaal om Illiricum aan Rome toe te ken eerder as aan Konstantinopel.

Verering

Pous Bonifatius I word as 'n heilige vereer in die Rooms-Katolieke Kerk. Sy feesdag is op 25 Oktober.
