Eden, 1881 After her drive shaft broke the previous day, the ocean liner sank in the Indian Ocean 400 nautical miles (740 km) off the Chagos Archipelago . Six lifeboats were launched; three were found and their occupants rescued, but the other three, with 90 passengers and crew aboard them, disappeared without trace.[ 10] The captain and thirty-eight crew and passengers were landed at Aden , Aden Colony on 13 November by Madeira (Flag unknown).[ 11] The steamship Wyberton ( United Kingdom ) rescued 38 survivors.[ 12] The steamship Delcomyn ( United Kingdom ) rescued nineteen survivors.[ 13]
