Celuloza je prirodni makromolekul koji nastaje fotosintezom.[2] Sastoji se od anhidrida glukoze empirijske formule (C6H10O5)n . Celuloza pripada grupi polisaharida koji predstavljaju do 80 % suve materije biljnog sveta, a među kojima je celuloza najznačajnija.

Potpunom hidrolizom celuloze dobija se D – glukoza

(C6H10O5)n +nH2O = nC6H12O6

Osnovu celuoloze čine ustvari, dva anhidrida D – glukoze, koji su vezani glukozidnom vezom i čine molekul celobioze. Ispitivanjem se došlo do zaključka da je celuloza polisaharid izgrađen od velikog broja molekula D – glukoze, povezanih glukozidnom vezom.

Celuloza u dodiru sa vodom bubri, utoliko više ukoliko je više amfornih područja u vlaknu. Od količine apsorbovane vode zavise mehaničke osobine celuloze, tj. veće bubrenje smanjuje mehaničku otpornost. Organski rastvarači izazivaju slabije bubrenje od vode.[3]

Polarni rastvarači (hloroform) pokazuju veću moć penetracije u vlakna celuloze, od nepolarnih rastvarača (ugljendisulfid). Sposobnost upijanja vlakna pojačana je posle tretiranja sa 20 % natrijum hidroksida.
