O totoró está clasificado como en perigo crítico polo Libro Vermello das Linguas Ameazadas da UNESCO[3]

A lingua totoró é unha lingua indíxena da familia barbacoana.[4] É falada no concello de Totoró, no departamento do Cauca por algunhas ducias de persoas do grupo étnico totoroez ou tontotuna. O totoró é unha lingua en perigo de extinción xa que, duns 9 mil indíxenas totoró que compoñen o grupo étnico,[5] só algúns deles son falantes da lingua. Aínda que existe un forte desexo de recuperar a cultura orixinal,[6] o futuro da lingua non é prometedor.

Dende o punto de vista lingüístico, o totoró está estreitamente relacionado co guambiano, cuxas variantes dialectais serían as linguas de Guambía, Quizgo, Ambaló, Coconuco e Tororó, que conforman o grupo coconucano da familia lingüística barbacoana.
