Familias de linguas faladas (non se amosan as linguas de sinais) no mundo.

A maioría das linguas coñecidas pertencen ás chamadas familias de linguas. En sentido estrito, unha familia de linguas é unha unidade filoxenética, é dicir, tódolos seus membros derivan dun devanceiro común (protolingua ou lingua nai).

Características

O antepasado é coñecido de forma directa en poucas ocasións xa que o rexistro histórico da maioría das linguas é moi curto. Así a todo, é posible recuperar moitas das características do antepasado común de linguas relacionadas aplicando o método comparativo, un procedemento de reconstrución desenvolvido no s. XIX polo lingüista August Schleicher. Pódese demostrar doadamente o status de moitas das familias listadas máis abaixo. As familias de linguas poden ser subdivididas en unidades menores, normalmente denominadas "ramas" (a historia dunha familia de linguas represéntase frecuentemente como unha árbore)

O devanceiro común dunha familia (ou unha rama) coñécese como "protolingua". Por exemplo, a protolingua reconstruída da ben coñecida familia indoeuropea é chamada protoindoeuropeo (da que non se conservan restos escritos xa que foi usada antes da invención da escrita). Ás veces unha protolingua pode ser identificada cunha linguaxe coñecida.

Así, os dialectos provinciais do latín ("latín vulgar") foron orixe das linguas romances modernas. É dicir, a lingua "protorromance" é máis ou menos idéntica ao latín (aínda que non idéntica ao latín culto dos escritores clásicos). Os dialectos do antigo nórdico son a protolingua do noruegués, o sueco, o danés e o islandés. De alí que ditas protolinguas resulten dunha "reconstrución" que os lingüistas intentan a partir de datos coñecidos e de varios sistemas de comparación lingüística e de evolución lingüística (ex.: a glotocronoloxía, a léxico-estatística etc.).

As linguas que non poden ser clasificadas con seguridade en ningunha familia son chamadas linguas illadas.
