“纽氏米鲁龙”("Merosaurus newmani")这一非正式名由塞缪尔·威尔斯(英语:Samuel Paul Welles)(Samuel Paul Welles)、H·P·鲍威尔(H. P. Powell)和史蒂芬·皮克林(Stephan Pickering)于1995年在一篇未发表的手稿中为该兽脚类材料所创造。[2][3][7]卡拉诺与辛普森(2004年)提出这块铰接的膝关节可能属于一种分类不明的原始坚尾龙类兽脚亚目。[8]德恩·耐许(英语:Darren Naish)(Darren Naish)和大卫·马提尔(英语:David Martill)(David Maryill)(2007年)亦将此标本归入坚尾龙类。[9]2010年,罗格·本森(Roger Benson)提出这些骨骼可归入腔骨龙超科,最终得出结论称这些标本均为分类不明的兽脚类。[10]
2024年,马修·巴伦(Matthew Baron)最终描述了鸟吻类新属新种诺氏多塞特盗龙(Dornraptor normani)。作者宣布将BMNH 39496即右膝关节选为正模标本。当初被欧文描述为属于该标本的腓骨已经遗失。GSM 109560即左股骨亦被归入该属。属名Dornraptor组合古英语“Dornwaraceaster”(指英国多塞特地区)的缩写“Dorn”和拉丁语“raptor”(意为“强盗”或“窃贼”,常用于命名中小型兽脚类)。种名normani致敬英国古生物学家大卫·诺曼(英语:David B. Norman)(David Norman)。[6]
