Julat jakal berbelakang hitam

Jakal berbelakang hitam (Lupulella mesomelas), juga dikenali sebagai jakal berbelakang perak atau jakal merah,[4] ialah satu spesies jakal yang mendiami dua kawasan di benua Afrika terpisah sejauh kira-kira 900 km (560 bt). Satu kawasan termasuk hujuan paling selatan benua, termasuk Afrika Selatan, Namibia, Botswana, dan Zimbabwe. Kawasan lainnya adalah di sepanjang pesisiran timur, termasuk Kenya, Somalia, Djibouti dan Habsyah. Ia disenaraikan oleh IUCN sebagai Kurang Membimbangkan, kerana julat tersebar luas dan kebolehsuaian, sungguhpun ia masih ditindas sebagai pemangsa haiwan ternakan dan vektor penyakit anjing gila.[3] Rekod fosil menandakan spesies ini ialah anggota genus Canis terawal.[2] Sungguhpun merupakan jakal berbinaan paling ringan, ia merupakan yang paling langsang, diperhatikan membunuh haiwan berganda daripada saiznya satu per satu, dan hubungan antara kawanan dan lebih suka bergaduh.[5]
