エケモス

エケモス（古希: Ἔχεμος, Echemos, 英: Echemus）は、ギリシア神話の人物である。アエロポスの子で[1][2][3]、アルカディアー地方の都市テゲアーの王[4]。あるいはアルカディアー地方の全権を掌握した[5]。ヘーラクレイダイの帰還の抵抗者であり、最初のオリュンピア競技祭（古代オリンピック）におけるパンクラティオンの優勝者としても知られる[6]。テュンダレオースの娘ティーマンドラーと結婚し[4][5][7][8]、ラーオドコス[4]あるいはラドコスをもうけた[9]。

神話

エケモスはペロポネーソス半島に帰還を果たさんとするヘーラクレイダイの指導者ヒュロスと一騎討ちで戦い、これを打ち倒したと伝えられている[1][2][10][3]。2人が戦った場所はメガラー地方とコリントス地方との境界、コリントス地峡であった[10][5]。

ヘーロドトスによると2人が戦った経緯は次のとおりである。ヒュロスがペロポネーソス半島に攻め込んだとき、ペロポネーソス側はこれを迎え撃ち、両軍が対峙した。ヒュロスは戦争ではなく一騎打ちをして、もし自分が勝利すればヘーラクレイダイはペロポネーソス半島に帰還し、父祖の権利を主張できるが、もし負ければ今後100年間は帰還のための行動を起こさないことを提案した。そこでテゲアーの軍勢を率いていたエケモスが志願してヒュロスと一騎討ちをし、ヒュロスを討った。このエケモスの功績によってテゲアーは多くの特権を得、特に各都市が連合軍を起こす際には、軍の一翼の指揮を執る権利が認められたという[1]。

なお、パウサニアスはテゲアー市内にはエケモスの墓があり、ヒュロスとの戦いを浮彫りした石碑があったことを伝えている[11]。
