Peter on muun muassa englannin- ja saksankielisissä maissa sekä Pohjoismaissa yleinen miehen etunimi. Nimi johtuu kiveä tai kalliota merkitsevästä kreikan kielen sanasta petros, joka esiintyy myös miehen nimenä ja jonka Jeesus Raamatun mukaan antoi apostoli Simonille ja joka suomenkielisessä Raamatussa esiintyy muodossa Pietari.[1]

Digi- ja väestötietoviraston mukaan Peter on huhtikuuhun 2024 mennessä ollut Suomessa etunimenä 13 985 miehellä.[2] Nimeä ei tässä muodossa ole suomen­kielisessä kalenterissa, mutta suomen­ruotsalaisen kalenterin mukaan Peterin nimipäivä on 29. kesäkuuta, apostoli Pietarin muisto­päivänä. Suomen­kielisessä kalenterissa samalle päivälle on sijoitettu saman nimen muunnokset Pietari, Petri, Petteri ja Pekka.
