Herne on kaupunki Nordrhein-Westfalenin osavaltiossa Saksassa. Vuoden 2022 lopussa kaupungissa oli 157 368 asukasta[2] Se sijaitsee Ruhrin alueella Emscher-joen laaksossa rajoittuen Herteniin, Recklinghauseniin, Castrop-Rauxeliin sekä Bochumiin ja Gelsenkircheniin. Herne on Saksan tiheimmin asuttuja kaupunkeja.

Herne muodostaa oman kaupunkipiirinsä (kreisfreie Stadt),[2] eli se ei kuulu mihinkään Saksan piirikunnista.

Historia

Varhaisin maininta Hernestä on vuodelta 880 muodossa Haranni. Muiden alueen kaupunkien tapaan Herne oli vain pieni kylä 1800-luvun puoliväliin asti, jolloin sinne perustettiin ensimmäinen kaivos. Vuonna 1872 Herneen perustettiin oppilaitos Haranni-Gymnasium. Kaupunkioikeudet Hernelle myönnettiin 1897.[3]

Asukasluku ylitti 100 000 rajan vuonna 1933 ja nykyään Herne lukeutuu Saksan pieniin suurkaupunkeihin. Naapurikaupunki Wanne-Eickel ja Herne liitettiin toisiinsa vuonna 1975. Tuolloin kaupungin väkiluku oli suurimmillaan: 193 831. Vuoriteollisuusmenneisyys näkyy vielä kaupunkikuvassa muutamina säilyneinä kaivostorneina. Lukuisat vuorimieskannatusyhdistykset pitävät perinnettä yllä.

Talous ja liikenne

Hernessä risteytyvät moottoritiet A 42 ja A 43. Joukkoliikennettä hoitavat useat raideliikenneyhtiöt Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhrin koordinoimina. Poliisin tilastojen valossa Herne on liikenneturvallisuudeltaan maan kärjessä. Kaupungin halki kulkee 45,6 kilometriä pitkä Rhein–Herne-kanava. Keskeinen sijainti on houkutellut kaupunkiin logistiikka-alan yrityksiä. Kaupungissa on myös muun muassa koneteollisuuden ja kemianteollisuuden laitoksia, kuten kemiakonserni Sasolin tuotantolaitokset.

Kulttuuri

Hernessä järjestetään joka vuosi elokuussa kymmenpäiväinen Carner Kirmes -kansanjuhla. Sen kävijämäärä on noin neljä miljoonaa. Vuodesta 1976 on marraskuisin järjestetty musiikkifestivaali Tage Alter Musik in Herne. Vuonna 2004 aloitettiin vuotuinen hardcore- ja metalcore -musiikin tapahtuma nimeltä Pressure Festival.

Tunnettuja asukkaita

Nykyisen Hernen alueella ovat syntyneet muun muassa näyttelijä Ernst Schröder, muusikko Ludger Lohmann, iskelmälaulaja Andrea Jürgens, jalkapallomaalivahti Stefan Wächter sekä jalkapalloilija Yıldıray Baştürk.
