火星撞擊坑

2014年机遇号火星车拍摄的坚忍撞击坑中伯恩斯悬崖内壁

火星上有數以萬計個大大小小的撞擊坑，但並非都有名字，因為自從1970年代海盜號製作全球地圖時就已開始將撞擊坑命名，往後隨探測器的相機解析度提高而發現的更多小撞擊坑則未全數命名，目前仅只有1000座已被命名。火星撞擊坑是以科學家或科幻作家的姓氏命名，而直徑小於60公里的大部分以地球上的城鎮命名。[1]

撞擊坑形態

火星的尤蒂撞擊坑，有壁壘型噴出物。

撞擊坑型態讓我們了解火星表面的結構和組成，尤其是地表下狀況和火星地質歷史。葉狀噴發物覆蓋層（左圖）和中間山（pit crater）在火星很常見，但在月球卻很少見。這些證據顯示有揮發性物質（液態水或水冰）在靠近地表處。撞擊坑的下降結構顯示了因為火山、河流作用與風成活動[2]。

尤蒂撞擊坑（Yuty Crater）是典型的壁壘型撞擊坑（Rampart crater），名字由來於噴發物邊緣的形狀。尤蒂撞擊坑的噴發物完全覆蓋了一側較老的另一撞擊坑，代表噴發物質只有很薄一層[3]。

人類觀測以來新形成的撞擊坑

至2014年5月，有明確記錄的新形成撞擊坑（形成前後皆有照片佐證）數量約有400個，直徑皆為數十公尺以內。[4]發現地點多為地表顏色較淺、沙塵覆蓋區域，原因是撞擊時會將地下顏色較暗的砂石撞出、覆蓋在周圍地表形成暗斑，照片上前後明暗差異明顯而較容易發現的緣故。[5]

中高緯度的一些新撞擊坑曾將地下水冰撞出[5]，而在數個月內漸漸昇華消失。[6]
