Antioco V Eupatore (Antiochus V Eupator, "[figlio] di un buon padre"; 173 a.C. – dopo il 29 ottobre 162 a.C.) è stato un sovrano dell'Impero seleucide dal 164 a.C. alla sua morte.

Biografia

Figlio di Antioco IV Epifane, divenne sovrano all'età di nove anni, in seguito alla morte di suo padre in Persia: il reggente era Lisia, che Epifane aveva lasciato in Siria, ma che era messo a dura prova dalla sfida di altri generali. Un ruolo importante in questi giochi politici era svolto dal Senato della Repubblica romana, che teneva in ostaggio il legittimo erede al trono, Demetrio figlio di Seleuco IV, ed esercitava la propria influenza con la minaccia di rilasciarlo.

I Seleucidi tentarono di porre fine ad una ribellione ebraica, ma, malgrado la vittoria militare ottenuta dall'esercito seleucide, non riuscirono che a strappare un debole compromesso. La situazione venne a deteriorarsi quando una missione diplomatica romana iniziò a girare per le città della Siria per far rispettare i termini del trattato di pace di Apamea del 188 a.C.: le navi da guerra vennero affondate e agli elefanti da guerra vennero tagliati i tendini. Lisia non si oppose a queste azioni, ma lo scontento siriano montò tanto che l'inviato romano, il console del 165 a.C. Gneo Ottavio, venne assassinato a Laodicea (162 a.C.): contemporaneamente Demetrio fuggì da Roma e venne acclamato sovrano al suo arrivo in Siria.

Sia Antioco Eupatore che il suo tutore vennero messi a morte poco dopo.
