カライスとゼーテース

カライス（古希: Κάλαϊς, Kalais）とゼーテース（古希: Ζήτης, Zētēs,　長母音を省略してゼテスとも）は、ギリシア神話に登場する有翼の英雄である。北風の神ボレアースとアテーナイ王エレクテウスの娘オーレイテュイアの子で、クレオパトラー、キオネーと兄弟[1]。兄弟そろってアルゴナウタイの勇者で、トラーキアでのハルピュイア退治で活躍した。

イアーソーン一行はこの航海での難所中の難所ボスポラス海峡を通過するため、アポローンによる呪いを受けた盲目の予言者でサルミュデーソスの王ピーネウスのもとを訪ねた。

しかし王は食事のたびに食卓を荒らしにくる二羽のハルピュイアのためにひどく衰弱しており、涙ながらに勇者たちに怪物の退治を依頼する。イアーソーンは申し出を快諾すると、食卓の下に隠れて食事の準備をするように言いつけた。果たして耳障りな鳴き声とともに現れたハルピュイアは早速食卓を荒らしまわり始めた。イアーソーンの合図とともに一斉に飛び出した屈強な英雄たちに仰天した二羽は、いつもどおり投石も届かない上空に避難しようとした。

しかし、この日は勝手が違っていた。なんと英雄たちの中から二人の若者が力強く羽ばたきながら二羽を追いかけてきたのだ。ハルピュイア達は泡を食って逃げ出し、二人の英雄カライス、ゼーテース兄弟はそれを追うが武装の重さのせいでなかなか追いつけない。しかし、若い二人は長い時間ハルピュイアを追い回し、疲労困憊したところを捕獲した。二羽は二人に命乞いをし、姉妹の悲鳴を聞きつけた虹の女神イーリスにとりなされて王の食卓を荒らさないことを条件に命を助けられた。

王は久方ぶりの食事で生気を取り戻し、若い英雄達を命の恩人として歓待した。そして海峡を渡るために鳩を使って試験するよう懇切丁寧に助言し、英雄達に祝福を与えた。

そして、アルゴナウタイとしての冒険を終えたのち、自分を置き去りにして出航するよう進言したことを恨んだヘーラクレースにより二人まとめて殺された。
