Brussel (sem hefur þrjú opinber nöfn, á frönsku heitir hún: Bruxelles, á hollensku: Brussel og á þýsku: Brüssel) er höfuðborg Belgíu, og þar að auki höfuðborg Flæmingjalands og frönskumælandi menningarsvæðisins í Belgíu, og aðalaðsetur flestra helstu stofnana Evrópusambandsins, vegna þessa er Brussel stundum kölluð „höfuðborg Evrópu“. Atlantshafsbandalagið hefur haft höfuðstöðvar sínar þar frá 1967 þegar það flutti þangað frá París. Borgin stendur inni í miðju landi.

Brussel-höfuðborgarsvæðið varð til í núverandi mynd við samruna 19 sveitarfélaga eða gemeenten / communes, en þau mynda enn sjálfstæðar heildir að flestu leyti. Ýmis önnur sveitarfélög renna einnig saman við þessa heild, þar má t.d. nefna Anderlecht og Waterloo.

Bæði franska og hollenska eru opinber mál á höfuðborgarsvæðinu.

Vinsælt kennileiti borgarinnar er Manneken Pis, eða Peðlingur piss eins og hann hefur verið kallaður á íslensku.[1]

-Orðsifjar borgarinnar eru ekki vitaðar með vissu en fremst er giskað á að heitið sé germanskt fremur en rómanskt og sett saman úr Broek -votlendi (sbr. enska brook -lækur & þýska bruch -mýri), og "salur". Sbr ennfremur Brooklyn af svipuðum toga.
