M92 (מ-Messier 92, נקרא גם NGC 6341) הוא צביר כדורי בקבוצת הכוכבים הרקולס הנמצא במרחק של כ-26,700 שנות אור ממערכת השמש. הוא פחות בהיר מצביר הרקולס (M13) הסמוך, אך ניתן לצפות בו באמצעות משקפת.

היסטוריה

הצביר התגלה על ידי האסטרונום הגרמני יוהאן אלרט בודה ב-27 בדצמבר 1777 ותואר כערפילית עגולה המפיצה אור חיוור. שארל מסיה צפה בצביר ב-18 במרץ 1781, אותו הלילה שבו גילה עוד 7 גלקסיות מצביר הבתולה (M84,‏ M86‏ - M91), ובלי שידע על גילויו הקודם, הכניס אותו לקטלוג מסיה, שם תואר כערפילית בהירה בין הברך והרגל השמאלית של הרקולס, ללא כוכבים ועם מרכז בהיר מוקף בערפיליות שנראה כמו גרעין של שביט ומזכירה בבהירותה, גודלה וצורתה את הערפילית האחרת שבחגורה של הרקולס. בשנת 1783 צפה האסטרונום ויליאם הרשל ב-M92 וזיהה שזהו צביר כוכבים. בתצפיות מאוחרות יותר הוא ציין שמרכז הצביר צפוף בהרבה משוליו ושחלקו הדחוס הוא בגודל של כשלוש ורבע דקות קשת.

תצפית

בהירות נראיתו של הצביר היא מדרגה 6.4 וגודלו הזוויתי כ-14 דקות קשת, כחצי מקוטר הירח המלא, כך שניתן לראותו באמצעות משקפת או אפילו ללא ציוד עזר כאשר תנאי התצפית מיטביים. באמצעות טלסקופ חובבים איכותי ניתן לצפות בכוכבי הצביר, שהבהירים שבהם הם מדרגת בהירות 12. M92 נמצא כ-6.3 מעלות מצפון לכוכב π (פאי) בהרקולס (שהוא הכוכב הצפון-מזרחי בטרפז המרכיב את גופו של הרקולס) וכ-4.9 מעלות מדרום-מערב לכוכב ι (יוטא) בהרקולס, סמוך לקו המחבר אותו עם הכוכב η (אטא) בהרקולס (שהוא הכוכב הצפון-מערבי בטרפז). M13 (צביר הרקולס) נמצא במרחק של כ-9.5 מעלות מדרום-מערב ל-M92.

מאפייני הצביר

M92 נמצא במרחק של למעלה מ-30,000 שנות אור ממרכז שביל החלב והוא מקיף אותו בזמן הקפה של כ-200 מיליון שנים ובמסלול אליפטי כך שמרחקו ממרכז הגלקסיה משתנה בין 5,000 שנות אור ל-35,000 שנות אור. מסתו של M92 מוערכת בפחות מ-500,000 מסות שמש, קוטרו כ-108 שנות אור והוא מאיר בעוצמה של פי 160,000 מהשמש. מרכזו דחוס, חצי ממסתו מרוכזת ברדיוס של כ-8.5 שנות אור[1] והוא מסווג כצביר מסוג IV. המתכתיות של הצביר נמוכה מאוד ביחס לצבירים אחרים מה שמצביע על גיל מבוגר במיוחד, שמוערך בלמעלה מ-13 מיליארד שנים, קרוב לגילו של היקום.[3] עד כה התגלו בצביר יותר מ-20 כוכבים משתנים, מהם 17 מהסוג של משתני RR בנבל.[4] הספקטרום של אור הצביר מתאים לקרינת כוכב מסוג ספקטרלי F2.[1]

בעוד כ-14,000 שנה תביא נקיפת ציר כדור הארץ את M92 למרחק של כמעלה אחת מהקוטב השמימי הצפוני.
