Matthew Arnold, nado en Laleham, Middlesex, en 1822 e finado en Liverpool en 1888, foi un poeta e crítico inglés, tío avó de Aldous Huxley.
Traxectoria
Mathhew Arnold traballou como inspector de escolas de 1851 a 1883 e estudou os problemas do ensino. De 1857 a 1867 ocupou a cátedra de poesía en Oxford. Escribiu durante a época vitoriana e compartiu a reacción contra o materialismo da sociedade burguesa. Algúns consideran a súa poesía unha ponte entre o romanticismo e o modernismo: O seu uso de paisaxes simbólicas son típicas do romanticismo, mentres que a súa mirada negativa cara todo é máis típica do modernismo, así como a tendencia racionalista. A súa poesía é de ton elexíaco, en contrastre cos seus intentos de representación crítica. Nos ensaios afirmou os valores éticos da literatura e os estéticos da relixión.
