John Rogers Searle, nado en Denver o 31 de xullo de 1932, é un filósofo norteamericano.
Comezou a súa educación universitaria na Universidade de Wisconsin-Madison e posteriormente obtivo un diploma de graduación e un doutoramento en filosofía e ética na Universidade de Oxford. Comezou a ensinar en Berkeley en 1959, onde foi o primeiro profesor titular en participar no movemento estudantil a prol da liberdade de expresión na universidade. Searle recibiu no ano 2000 o Premio Jean Nicod, que é un premio concedido anualmente en París, para un filósofo líder na área de Filosofía da Mente ou filosoficamente orientado a ciencia cognitiva. Obtivo títulos honoris causa da Universidade de Adelphi (1993), da Universidade de Wisconsin (1994), Universidade de Turín (2000), Universidade de Bucarest (2000) e a Universidade da Suíza Italiana (2003).
Seguindo aos seus mestres Austin e Peter Strawson, sostén que os enunciados non son soamente verificativos; para el dicir é facer. O mero dicir forma parte do ámbito da acción humana. O exemplo da promesa é o máis claro.
Falar unha linguaxe é tomar parte nunha forma de conduta rexida por regras. Aprendelo é dominar esas regras. Estas poden ser regulativas dunha actividade preexistente ou constitutivas cando a actividade depende loxicamente delas.
A unidade básica ou mínima da comunicación xa non é o símbolo, a palabra ou a oración senón os actos da fala. Incluso nos enunciados de aparencia descritiva incorporan un facer: o acto de afirmar e informar. A un locutor en primeira persoa lle corresponde un interlocutor en segunda persoa, destinatario da mensaxe.
A razón non é un mero dispositivo mecánico, nin a conduta humana está determinada como efecto dalgunhas premisas. Existe unha creba entre os condicionantes da acción e a acción mesma.
