Europeisk kulturhovedstad

Riga (Latvia) var europeisk kulturhovedstad i 2014.
Umeå (Sverige) var europeisk kulturhovedstad i 2014.

Europeisk kulturhovedstad ble etablert i 1985 etter et initiativ fra den greske kulturministeren Melina Mercouri i et møte den 13. juni 1985 blant Den europeiske unions kulturministre. Formålet med europeisk kulturhovedstad skal være å bringe Europas befolkning sammen. EU utpeker kulturhovedstad på bakgrunn av en anbefaling fra Europakommisjonen og synspunkter fra Europaparlamentet. Fra 2005 er det lagt til grunn et rotasjonssystem slik at hvert medlemsland har anledning til å fremme sine kandidater et bestemt år. Mellom 2011 og 2017 var statusen som Europas kulturhovedstad forbeholdt EU-land.[1][2][3]

Av byer i Norge var Bergen kulturhovedstad i 2000, Stavanger i 2008, og Bodø i 2024.

Stavanger var sammen med Liverpool kulturhovedstad i 2008.
