Carla del Ponte (født 9. februar 1947) er en sveitsisk jurist og ambassadør.

Liv og virke

Bakgrunn

Carla del Ponte vokste opp med tre brødre i en liten landsby i Kanton Ticino. Moren var barnepleier og faren drev hotell. Hun studerte internasjonal rett i Bern, Genève og Storbritannia.

Karriere

Fra 1972 arbeidet hun ved et advokatkontor i Lugano, og i 1975 startet hun sin egen praksis. I 1981 ble hun statsadvokat i kantonen Ticino (tysk: Tessin). Hennes kompromissløse kamp mot hvitvasking av penger, organisert kriminalitet og økonomisk kriminalitet ga henne økenavnet Carlita la pesta (Carlita, pesten). I 1994 ble hun utnevnt til riksadvokat i Sveits.

Hun arbeidet tett med den senere myrdede italienske dommeren Giovanni Falcone mot mafiaen, og i 1989 unngikk hun bare såvidt et bombeangrep i Falcones feriehus ved Palermo.

Carla del Ponte

Fra september 1999 var hun sjefsanklager ved FNs krigsforbrytertribunal (ICTY) i Haag inntil Serge Brammertz avløste henne 1. januar 2008. Hun stod blant annet for prosessen mot den serbiske president Slobodan Milošević.

I forbindelse med at del Ponte i 1999 ble utnevnt som sjefsanklager ved ICTY, ble hun også utnevnt til sjefsanklager ved Det internasjonale krigsforbrytertribunalet for Rwanda (ICTR), hvor hun avløste Louise Arbour. 15. september 2003 utnevnte Sikkerhetsrådet Hassan Bubacar Jallow som hennes etterfølger, slik at hun kunne konsentrere seg om sakene fra det tidligere Jugoslavia.

Hun var ambassadør i Argentina for hjemlandet Sveits fra 2008 til hun gikk i pensjon februar 2011.

Hun snakker italiensk, tysk, fransk og engelsk. Hun fikk en sønn i et tidligere ekteskap.
