Brendan sjøfareren på Commons

Brendan sjøfareren (født ca. 486, død 578 eller 583 - dødsdato tradisjonelt datert til 16. mai 577) var en irsk oppdager og helgen.

Han var sønn av Findlugh, og ble antagelig født ved Tralee i Kerry. Som barn ble han overlatt til St. Ita, en nonne som holdt til i Killeedy. Han fikk sin utdannelse ved klosterskolen til St. Jarlath, med biskop Erc av Kerry som lærer. Erc ordinerte ham til prest i 512.

Brendan hadde sin virksomhet først og fremst i den vestlige delen av Irland, hvor man finner mange steder som bærer hans navn, blant annet Mount Brandon på Dinglehalvøya. Han grunnla klostre over hele Irland, med Clonfert Abbey i Galway, ca. 559, som det viktigste. Andre kjente grunnleggelser er Annaghdown Abbey i Galway, Inishadroum Abbey i Clare og Ardfert Abbey i Kerry.

Han reiste mye og skal blant annet ha besøkt Kolomba av Iona i Argyll. Det finnes også flere legender om at han grunnla klostre i Skottland og Wales, og at han reiste til Bretagne. Alt dette er svært usikkert, men han hadde en sterk helgenkult alle disse stedene.

Han døde i 578 eller 583, antagelig under et besøk hos sin søster Brig i Annaghdown i Galway. Brendan skal ha forutsagt at det ville bli gjort forsøk på å holde tilbake hans legeme som relikvie, og sørget derfor for at hans død ble holdt hemmelig slik at legemet kunne fraktes til Clonfert kamuflert som bagasje som han sendte i forveien før han selv reiste hjem til klosteret.

Brendan ble raskt regnet som en helgen, og er en av Irlands tre mest berømte helgener. Han regnes med til gruppen Irlands tolv apostler.

I kunsten vises han gjerne mens han leser messen på et skip, eller stående på en hval. Sistnevnte viser til en historie om at munkene under reisen (se nedenfor) gikk i land på ryggen til en hval for å feire påskemesse. Etter messen tente de et bål på det de trodde var en holme, og måtte flykte tilbake i båtene da hvalen våknet.

Brendans reiser

Tilnavnet «sjøfareren» fikk han på grunn av boken Brendans reiser, som forteller historien om hans reise sammen med seksti munker i skinnkledde båter (currach) da han var syv år gammel. De lette etter et «forjettet land» i Atlanterhavet. Stedet har blitt identifisert som Hebridene eller andre øyer nord for Skottland, Island, Kanariøyene og Nord-Amerika, uten at man har kommet til noen enighet. Boken ble skrevet av en utvandret irsk munk og har trekk fra både tidlige kristne skrifter og irsk folklore. Den var meget populær og er bevart i hele 116 manuskripter på latin fra middelalderen; i tillegg finnes den i oversettelse på middelengelsk, fransk, tysk, flamsk, italiensk, provençalsk og norsk. Historien er gjenfortalt i verseform i moderne språkdrakt av Matthew Arnold.

Fortellingen har fellestrekk med tidligere immram, reiser til underverdenen – henlagt til øyer vest i havet, i irsk mytologi. Den mest kjente av disse er Brans sjøreise.

En ekspedisjon ledet av Tim Severin i 1976/77 viste at det var mulig å seile med irske skinnbåter helt til Nord-Amerika. Severins bok Navigatio – The Brendan Voyage forteller i detalj om mulighetene for at historien er sann, uten at det blir identifisert noe sikkert landingssted for munkene.
