Di utara Laut Ionia terletaklah Laut Adriatik dengan Selat Otranto, dan di selatan terletaklah Laut Tengah di antara daratan selatan Peloponnisos dan Sisilia. Ionia sendiri berasal dari bahasa Yunani yakni Ἰόνιον. Penulis Yunani kuno seperti Aeschylus mengaitkan kata "Ἰόνιον" dengan legenda dewa Lo. Kata sifat Ionios adalah julukan untuk laut dan samudera karena dewa Lo berenang melintasi perairan yang berbadai. Namun kamus Oxford menunjukkan nama itu diambil dari Ionia yaitu grup atau komunitas pelaut yang berlayar ke barat. Mitologi Yunani cukup bercokol pada seputar narasi tentang tokoh-tokoh legendaris dan mitos terkait penamaan Laut Ionia.[1]
