Laut Wandel (juga dikenal sebagai Laut McKinley) adalah bagian dari Samudera Arktik, membentang dari timur laut Greenland ke Svalbard. Laut Wandel terletak di bujur 82°LU dan 21°BB. Laut Wandel lebih jauh ke utara dan barat laut. Laut Wandel beku sepanjang tahun. Laut Wandel membentang jauh ke barat Tanjung Morris Jesup. Jauh ke barat adalah Laut Lincoln. Di selatan, membentang hingga ke Nordostrundingen. Lebih jauh ke selatan adalah Laut Greenland. Nama dari laut ini diambil untuk menghormati penjelajah kutub dan hidrografer Denmark yang bernama Carl Frederik Wandel (1843-1930), yang menjelajahi daerah ini pada tahun 1890-an.

Sejarah

Zaman Karbon Awal

Awalnya, Laut Wandel adalah sebuah endapan yang terpengaruh oleh Orogeni Kaledonia di Pulau Holmes bagian selatan dengan dasar batuan kristal. Hal ini pun ditunjukkan dengan adanya makroflora yang hidup menunjukkan usia awal tersebut beserta endapan fluvial berukuran lebih dari 1000 meter.[1]

Zaman Karbon Akhir

Kemudian, endapan di Pulau Holmes tersebut mengalami suksesi dengan terjadinya siklus batugamping. Terakhir, berdasarkan studi lapangan yang dilakukan pada tahun 1993-1995, endapan tersebut ada hubungannya dengan suksesi Laut Barents serta dalam cekungan pada zona fusulinid. Susunan fusulinid tersebut termasuk dalam sedimen laut tertua di Pulau Holmes dan Pulau Amdrup yang didominasi oleh fauna antara lain Profusulinella spp., Pseudostaffella spp., Eofusulina aff., E. triangula, dan ?Aljutovella sp..[1]

Permian Tengah hingga Akhir

Pada Pulau Amdrup utara, di daerah sesar turunnya terkandung sedimen, di dalamnya tersebar batu pasir dan batu lanau yang luasnya lebih dari 70 meter berusia jurasik.[1]

Jura Akhir

Sedimen pada masa Permian tersebut mengalami deformasi dengan usianya yang maksimum dan diawetkan di inti synform utara patahan Sommerterrasserne. Sekuens ini juga terkait dengan Formasi Ladegårdsåen di bagian utara Pulau Peary.[1]

Tersier

Pada akhirnya, endapan pada masa Paleosen yang menentukan formasi utama dari basin pada Laut Wandel. Penentuan tersebut didasarkan pada dinoflagellata langka dan makroflora, termasuk di dalamnya spora dan pollen. Indikasi masa Paleosen juga didasarkan pada penemuan Cerodinium speciosum dan Spinidinium pilatum.[1]
