რელიგიები ჩინური ხალხური რელიგია, მაჰაიანა, დაოსიზმი, კონფუციანელობა[2], ქრისტიანობა და სხვა რელიგიური უმცირესობები.

ჩინელები — დედამიწის ყველაზე მრავალრიცხოვანი ერი, ჩინეთის ძირითადი მოსახლენი (1,207 მლნ). დიდი ჩინური დიასპორებია მალაიზიაში (5,2 მლნ), ინდონეზიაში (5,2 მლნ), სინგაპურში (3,684 მლნ), ფილიპინებში (1.146 მლნ).

ჩინელების წინაპრებს მიეკუთვნებიან იანძის და ხუანხეს აუზში მცხოვრები მიწათმოქმედი ტომები, რომლებმაც ძვ. წ. III-II ათასწლელებში შექმნეს ერთმანეთისგან განსხვაებული ნეოოლითური კულტურები. ძვ. წ. II ათასწლეულში აღმოცენდა სახელმწიფოებრივი გაერთიანება ინი, რომელიც ძვ. წ. XI საუკუნეში დაიპყრეს მეზობელმა ჯოუს ტომებმა. ძველი ჩინელი ხალხი წარმოიშვა ხანის დინასტიის დროს, ძვ. წ. III–ახ. წ. III საუკუნეებში. ხანის სახელმწიფოს ზრდას მოჰყვა ჩინელების გადასახლება სამხრეთით. VI-IX საუკუნეებში ჩინელების ეთნიკურ კონსოლიდაციას ხელი შეუწყო ტანის დინასტიის არსებობამ. XIII საუკუნის შუა წლებში ჩინეთის სახელმწიფოები დაიპყრეს მონღოლებმა. მათი განდევნის შემდეგ გრძელდებოდა ჩინელების გადასახლება სამხრეთთ. XVII-XX საუკუნეების მანჯურიული ცინის დინასტიის დროს ჩამოყალიბდა ჩნეთის თანამედროვე პოლიტიკური საზღვრები. XIX საუკუნის ბოლოსა და XX საუკუნის დასაწყისიდან ჩინელები დასახლდნენ მანჯურიაშიც.
