O nome Brigantia é a forma feminina do protoindoeuropeo*bhr̥g'hntī, da raíz berg'h "alto, nobre, elevado".
O nome era en orixe un epíteto adxectivable que significaba simplemente "a alta", "a elevada".
O etónimo Brigantes tamén se pode traducir como "os altos, os nobres" ou "os das terras altas" (IEW, s.v. "bhereg'h-").
