Η Περιφερειακή Ενότητα Καβάλας είναι μία από τις Περιφερειακές Ενότητες στις οποίες διαιρέθηκε η Ελλάδα με την εφαρμογή του σχεδίου Καλλικράτης και υπάγεται διοικητικά στην Περιφέρεια Ανατολικής Μακεδονίας και Θράκης.[1] Έχει έκταση 1.732 τ.χλμ. και μόνιμο πληθυσμό 116.195, σύμφωνα με την απογραφή του 2021 από την ΕΛ.ΣΤΑΤ..[2] Περιλαμβάνει το ηπειρωτικό τμήμα του πρώην Νομού Καβάλας. Ο φορέας στεγάζεται στο διοικητήριο Καβάλας.

Είναι από τις λίγες Περιφερειακές Ενότητες της Ελλάδας των οποίων τα διοικητικά όρια δεν ταυτίζονται απόλυτα με αυτά του αντίστοιχου πρώην Νομού, καθώς προέκυψε από διαχωρισμό του ηπειρωτικού τμήματος του Νομού από το νησιωτικό του τμήμα (που περιλαμβάνει τη Θάσο).[3] Παρόλα αυτά, αρμόδια για τα θέματα της Περιφερειακής Ενότητας Θάσου είναι η Περιφερειακή Ενότητα Καβάλας.[4].

Οι πινακίδες οχημάτων ήταν παλαιότερα από "ΚΒ" στα αυτοκίνητα και μέχρι ενός σημείου στα δίκυκλα, ενώ μέχρι ένα διάστημα υπήρχε και το "ΑΗ" που ανήκε στον Νομό Ξάνθης. Πλέον, τα δίκυκλα φέρουν τα γράμματα "ΑΒ" και τα οχήματα δημόσιων υπηρεσιών είτε τα διακριτικά "ΚΗ" είτε τα "ΚΥ".
