17. Seanad
Der 17. Seanad amtierte als Seanad Éireann von Februar 1983 bis April 1987. Die Wahl zum 17. Seanad fand im Januar statt, nachdem der 24. Dáil im November 1982 neugewählt wurde.
Auflösung
Der Seanad Éireann amtierte etwas zeitversetzt zum jeweiligen Dáil. Der 23. Dáil wurde im Januar 1987 aufgelöst und somit etwas später auch der 17. Seanad Éireann. Ihm folgte der 18. Seanad, der sich im April 1987 konstituierte.
Cathaoirleach
Die Mitglieder wählen aus ihren Reihen einen Vorsitzenden des Seanads, den Cathaoirleach, sowie den Stellvertreter, den Leas-Chathaoirleach. Am Tag der konstituierenden Sitzung, dem 23. Februar 1983, schlug James Dooge Patrick J. Reynolds als Cathaoirleach vor und wurde dabei von Seán O’Leary (alle Fine Gael) unterstützt. Er wurde per Akklamation gewählt.[1]
Als Leas-Chathaoirleach wurde am 9. März 1983 Tras Honan von Mick Lanigan mit Unterstützung von Thomas Hussey (alle Fianna Fáil) vorgeschlagen. Er wurde durch Akklamation gewählt.[2]
