Die term Papoeas verwys na die nie-Austronesiese en nie-Australiese tale wat deur sowat 4 miljoen mense gepraat word op die eiland Nieu-Guinee in die weste van die Stille Oseaan, asook op naburige eilande.[1] Dit is ’n streng geografiese groepering en dui nie op enige verwantskap nie. Die begrip "Papoeavolke" as apart van Austronesiessprekende Melanesiërs, is in 1892 die eerste keer deur die Britse linguis Sidney Herbert Ray genoem.

Nieu-Guinee is die streek met die meeste tale ter wêreld. Benewens die Austronesiese tale is daar sowat 800 tale wat in omtrent 60 klein taalfamilies ingedeel word, met ’n onduidelike verband tussen mekaar en met enige ander tale, asook baie geïsoleerde tale. Die meeste Papoeastale word op Nieu-Guinee gepraat; ander word op die Bismarckargipel, die eiland Bougainville en die Salomonseilande in die ooste en op Halmahera, Timor en die Alor-argipel in die weste aangetref. Een Papoeastaal, Meriam, word in die nasionale grense van Australië gepraat, in die oostelike Torresstraat. Die enigste tale met amptelike erkenning is dié van Oos-Timor.

Verskeie ander tale van die eilande van Oos-Indonesië word as Austronesiese tale geklassifiseer, maar het talle nie-Austronesiese woorde en grammatika. Daar is al voorgestel hulle was aanvanklik nie-Austronesiese tale wat feitlik hulle hele woordeskat aan die naburige Austronesiese tale ontleen het, maar geen verband is gevind met die Papoeastale van Timor nie.
