Islam di Papua Nugini adalah agama minoritas. Menurut studi Hussain Kettani pada tahun 2010, terdapat 2.473 muslim di Papua Nugini yang membentuk 0.04% dari jumlah penduduk[1]. Mayoritas di antaranya merupakan penganut Sunni, sedangkan sebagian kecil mengikuti Ahmadiyyah.[2] Mayoritas Muslim di Papua Nugini adalah bukan penduduk asli.[3]
Orang-orang yang saat ini Papua Nugini dan Papua Barat berdagang dengan Cina dan kerajaan malay, yang terakhir yang beragama Islam, dimulai pada abad ke-16.[4] Pada tahun 1988, umat Islam di Papua Nugini mendirikan pusat Islam pertama, dengan bantuan dari Malaysia berbasis organisasi Islam dan Kementerian urusan Islam Arab Saudi. Pada tahun 1996, tiga pusat Islam didirikan, dengan bantuan dari Liga Muslim Dunia. Sekarang ada tujuh pusat-pusat Islam di negara ini. Masjid pertama yang dibangun di Port Moresby, dengan kapasitas untuk menyimpan hingga 1.500 jamaah.[5]
Saat ini, ada sekitar 4.000 Muslim di negeri ini, dengan banyak memeluk kepercayaan ini dalam beberapa tahun terakhir.[6]
Dalam beberapa tahun terakhir, pejuang dari milisi Islam Laskar Jihad muncul di negara tetangga Papua sepanjang perbatasan bersama.[7]
Di Papua Nugini, gerakan-gerakan misionaris Islam baru mulai berkembang. Ada kantong-kantong Muslim di sekitar Port Moresby, di Baimuru, Daru, Marchall Lagoon, yang Musa Valley dan di pulau New Britain dan New Irlandia. Itu adalah di dataran tinggi bahwa Islam mengalami pertumbuhan yang paling pesat.[8]
