Islam di Peru saat ini merupakan agama minoritas. Dari populasi Peru yang berjumlah 33.456.994 orang, 3.346 orang mengidentifikasikan diri sebagai muslim.[1]
Islam, untuk pertama kalinya diperkenalkan oleh Morisco dari Spanyol yang melarikan diri karena menghadapi genosida. Terdapat pula seorang wakil Raja Spanyol di Peru yang diketahui merupakan seorang Morisco dari Guadalajara yang bernama Alvaro Gonzalez.
Pada tahun 1560, ia dijebloskan ke dalam penjara di Cusco dengan tuduhan menyebarkan dan mempraktikkan ajaran Islam di Peru. Rekannya juga mengalami hal dan tuduhan yang sama.
Islam hampir terpinggirkan dan tidak memiliki suara di negara tersebut dikarenakan banyaknya genosida terhadap muslim. Di samping itu, seorang misionaris Kekristenan asal Peru amat menggilai perannya menjadi penyebar agama Kristen.
Keadaan berubah pada tahun 1940 yang dimana terjadi eksodus muslim Palestina dan muslim Lebanon yang melarikan diri dari Israel karena mendapatkan tekanan. Mereka masuk ke Peru dan menyebarkan Islam untuk kedua kalinya.[2]
Masjid terkenal di Peru adalah Masjid Babul Islam yang terletak di Tacna. Masjid ini didirikan pada tahun 2000. Masjid ini cukup terkenal di kalangan muslim Peru karena ini merupakan masjid pertama yang ada di Peru.
