William Boyce på Commons

Willam Boyce (1711–1779) var en engelsk førklassisistisk komponist.

Boyce var blant de svært få betydningsfulle engelskfødte komponister som virket i hans samtid.

Biografi

Boyce sang i koret ved St. Pauls katedral. Etter stemmeskiftet studerte han musikk med Maurice Greene. I 1734 fikk han sin første profesjonelle stilling som organist ved Oxford Chapel, og han virket i en rekke lignende stillinger før han ble utnevnt til Master of the King's Musick i 1755 og deretter til organist ved Chapel Royal i 1758.

Boyce ble gradvis døv og sa derfor opp organistposten.

I stedet arbeidet han på arbeidet på trebindsverket Cathedral Music som Maurice Greene hadde påbegynt. Verket gir en oversikt over komponister som William Byrd, Henry Purcell og Thomas Tallis og var i over hundre år standardverket om engelsk kirkemusikk på 1500-, 1600- og 1700-tallet.

Musikk

Boyce skrev et stort antall kirkelige og verdslige vokalverk, oder, sanger, kantater og sceneverk. Av instrumentalmusikk skrev han 8 symfonier, 15 triosonater, 12 overtyrer, 3 concerti grossi og klaververk.

Ved siden av Thomas Arne var Boyce en av svært få av tidens engelske komponister som tålte sammenligning med sine kontinentale kolleger. Til forskjell fra de fleste andre, klarte Boyce stort sett å unngå å bli påvirket av Georg Friedrich Händels musikk.

Etter William Boyces død falt musikken hans i glemsel. Først på 1900-tallet ble instrumentalmusikken, særlig symfoniene og kammermusikken, gjenstand for fornyet interesse.
