後周（こうしゅう、951年 - 960年）は、中国の王朝で、五代の最後の王朝である。国号は単に周であるが、古代の周と区別するために後周と呼ぶ。都は開封にあった。
日本の東洋史学者の岡田英弘は、建国者の郭威は邢州堯山県の人であるから漢人のようであり、養子の柴栄も邢州竜岡県（現在の河北省邢台市信都区）の人であり、郭威の妻の兄の子から郭威の養子となったから同じく漢人のようであるが、異民族とされる唐朝の興ったのは隆堯県であり、唐朝の先祖の李熙・李天錫の二代の墓があるのも隆堯県であり、李天錫の子が李虎（鮮卑宇文部の宇文泰が自分と同じ立場の武川鎮軍閥関係者から八柱国と十二大将軍を置いたが、十二大将軍の一人が隴西郡開国公李虎）であるように隆堯県は異民族の住地であり、同じ異民族の安禄山も邢州出身だったことから郭威・柴栄はもともとは突厥沙陀部の血筋を引いていると考えてよいと述べている[1]。
後漢の実力者であった郭威は、皇帝の劉承祐（隠帝）に排除されそうになるが、逆に劉承祐に対して反乱を起こした。郭威の反乱に触発されて劉承祐が家臣に殺されると、郭威は開封に入って自ら皇帝に即位し、新王朝の「後周」を建国した。
劉承祐によって郭威の息子や一族が皆殺しにされてしまったため、954年に郭威が死去すると、その亡妻の甥で養子の柴栄が即位した。これが五代随一の名君と言われる世宗である。
世宗（柴栄）は内政に積極的に取り組み、国力を充実させると、唐崩壊以来果たされなかった中国の再統一を目指し、北漢・後蜀・南唐・遼を攻めて領土を広げたが、遼遠征の途中病気にかかり、959年に若くして死んだ。
世宗の死後、遺児である7歳の柴宗訓が後を継いだが、間もなく幼帝に不安を抱いた軍人たちは、遠征に派遣された軍中でその司令官であった殿前都点検（近衛軍長官）の趙匡胤を擁立した。
ほとんど抵抗を受けずに開封に入った趙匡胤は、恭帝から禅譲を受けて宋を立てた（陳橋の変）。
こうして後周は3代で滅亡したが、趙匡胤は柴宗訓の守役に自身の師である辛文悦を任命して、前皇帝を殺害する意思が無い事を明らかにした（もし柴宗訓を殺したならば守役も同時に殺さねばならないため）。そして、柴宗訓が病気のために早世すると、皇帝として葬った。趙匡胤の遺訓により、柴宗訓の子孫は南宋が終わるまで手厚く保護され、300年続いた。
