イクチオサウルス（学名:Ichthyosaurus）は中生代後期三畳紀レーティアンから前期ジュラ紀プリンスバッキアンにかけて^[2]ヨーロッパ（ベルギー・イングランド・ドイツ・スイス）とアジア（インドネシア）に生息していた魚竜の属。魚竜の中で最も著名な属であり、魚竜目（イクチオサウリア）の模式属となっている^[3]^[4]^[5]。

発見と歴史

イングランドで暮らすメアリー・アニングとその兄ジョセフ・アニングにより1811年から1812年にかけてイクチオサウルス・プラティオドンの化石が発見された。ただし、イクチオサウルス・プラティオドンは後にテムノドントサウルス・プラティオドンに再分類されることとなった^[6]。

1980年代にイングランドのドーセット州で発見された化石には、2015年、アニングにちなんでイクチオサウルス・アニンガエと命名された^[7]^[8]^[9]。この化石はドンカスター博物館・美術館に所蔵されていたが、模型と間違えられていた。2008年にマンチェスター大学のディーン・ロマックスが標本を本物の化石と判断し、ニューヨーク州立大学のジュディ・マサリとともに研究を進め、新種と認定した^[7]。

形態

イクチオサウルスは近縁の魚竜の大半よりも小さく、全長は3.3メートルに達する^[10]。化石化した何百もの骨格がドイツのホルツマーデンにあるジュラ紀の岩石中から発見されている。胎児を身籠っている標本もあり、イクチオサウルスが胎生であったことが示唆されている。同様の標本が近縁な属であるステノプテリギウスでも発見されている^[11]^[12]。ドイツの標本はイクチオサウルスの輪郭を如実に表しており、肉質の背ビレと巨大な尾ビレが存在したことが明らかになっている。他の魚竜でも同様の化石は発見されており、これはイクチオサウルスに限定される話ではない。

生態

イクチオサウルスの耳骨は硬く、水の振動を内耳へ伝搬していたと考えられている。とはいえ解剖学的特徴からイクチオサウルスが視力に重点を置いた捕食者であることが証明されており、巨大で敏感な目は強膜輪に保護されていた。魚類とイカを主な食糧としていたことが糞石から判明している^[13]。

当初イクチオサウルスは陸上で産卵したと信じられていたが、雌が幼体を産んでいたという化石証拠が存在する。陸上に上がらないなど、完全なる海洋生活によく適応していることが窺える。胎児は尾から産まれ、水中で溺れることを防いでいた^[11]。
