יודית יאנס לייסטר (בהולנדית: Judith Leyster; בערך 28 ביולי 1609 – 10 בפברואר 1660)[1] הייתה ציירת הולנדית בתור הזהב. היא ציירה עבודות ז'אנר, דיוקנאות וטבע דומם. על אף שעבודותיה זכו להערכה רבה על ידי בני זמנה, לייסטר ויצירתה כמעט ונשכחו לאחר מותה. כל היצירות שלה יוחסו לפרנס הלס או לבעלה, יאן מינס מולנייר, עד שנת 1893.

ביוגרפיה

לייסטר נולדה בהארלם,[2] ילדה השמינית של יאן וילמס לייסטר, מבשל בירה מקומי.

אין פרטים על הכשרתה כאמנית. משערים כי לייסטר עשתה קריירה בציור כדי לעזור לפרנס את משפחתה לאחר פשיטת הרגל של אביה. ייתכן שהיא למדה ציור מפרנס דה גרבר,[3] שניהל בית מלאכה מכובד בהארלם בשנות העשרים של המאה ה-17.[4] במהלך תקופה זו עברה משפחתה לפרובינציה של אוטרכט, וייתכן שהיא באה במגע עם כמה מהציירים חסידי קראבאג'ו שהיו שם.[1]

עבודתה הראשונה שנחתמה היא משנת 1629.[5] עד שנת 1633 הייתה חברה בגילדה סנט לוק בהארלם. יש ויכוח האם היא הייתה האישה הראשונה שנרשמה על ידי הגילדה. כמה מקורות טוענים שזאת הייתה לייסטר בשנת 1633 ואחרים טוענים שמדובר בשרה ואן באלברגן בשנת 1631.[6] בכל מקרה עשרות אמניות אחרות התקבלו לגילדת סנט לוק במהלך המאה ה-17. עם זאת, לעיתים קרובות לא צוינו המדיום בו עבדו - בתקופה זו אמנים שהיו עובדים ברקמה, ציור חרס, מתכת ועץ נכללו בגילדות - או שהם נכללו ברשימות הגילדה כהמשך לעבודת בעליהם שנפטרו.[6]

הדיוקן העצמי של לייסטר, משנת 1633, משערים שהייתה היצירה שייצגה אותה בגילדה. עבודה זו מסמנת מעבר מהנוקשות של ייצוג דיוקנאות עצמיים של נשים לפניה, לטובת תנוחה דינאמית יותר של הדמות.[7][8] הדמות רגועה מאוד בסטנדרטים של דיוקן הולנדי, בעיקר שמשווים לכמה דיוקנאות של פרנס הלס. אם כי נראה שלא סביר שהיא לבשה בגדים רשמיים כאלו כשהיא ציירה בצבעי שמן, במיוחד מדובר בצווארון התחרה הרחב מאוד שעוטף אותה.

הזוג המאושר, ציור של יודית לייסטר

בתוך שנתיים לאחר כניסתה לגילדה, לימדה לייסטר שלושה חניכים גברים. על פי הרשומות, לייסטר תבעה את פרנס הלס על כך שהעסיק סטודנט שעזב את בית המלאכה שלה בלי לקבל קודם את רשות הגילדה.[9] אמו של הסטודנט שילמה ללייסטר ארבע גילדן פיצויים, רק מחצית ממה שלייסטר ביקשה. האלס הסדיר את חלקו בתביעה בכך ששילם קנס של שלושה גילדן הולנדי במקום להחזיר את החניך. לייסטר עצמה נקנסה על כך שלא רשמה את החניך לגילדה. בעקבות התביעה שלה עם פרנס הלס, ציוריה של לייסטר זכו להכרה רבה יותר.[10]

בשנת 1636 התחתנה לייסטר עם יאן מינס מולנייר, אמן פורה יותר ממנה שעבד על נושאים דומים. בתקווה לסיכויים כלכליים טובים יותר, הם עברו לאמסטרדם שם כבר היו לו לקוחות. הם נשארו שם במשך אחת עשרה שנים לפני שחזרו לאזור הארלם. שם הם חלקו סטודיו בבית קטן שנמצא בפארק גריננדאל בימינו. ללייסטר ומולנייר נולדו חמישה ילדים, שרק שניים מהם שרדו לבגרות.

מרבית יצירותיה של לייסטר מתוארכות בין 1629 ל-1635. יש מעט יצירות ידועות שציירה לאחר 1635. שני איורים בספר על צבעונים משנת 1643, דיוקן משנת 1652, וחיים דוממים משנת 1654 שהתגלה באוסף פרטי.[11] לייסטר אולי עבדה גם יחד עם בעלה.[1] היא נפטרה בשנת 1660, בת 50. היא נקברה בחווה מחוץ להארלם, ויצירות האמנות שלה לא הוצגו ולא הוכרו כשלה במשך קרוב ל 200 שנה.[12] העובדה שהציורים שנותרו באחוזתם יוחסו ל"אשתו של מולנייר", ולא ליודית לייסטר, אולי תרמה להערכה לא נכונה של עבודתה עם בעלה.[13]

יצירתה

היא חתמה על עבודותיה במונוגרמה של ראשי התיבות שלה JL עם כוכב צמוד. המונוגרמה הייתה קיצור של "לייסטר" היינו "כוכב עופרת" בהולנדית. ציידים הולנדים בתקופה ההיא כינו בשם זה את כוכב הצפון. לייסטר היה גם שם מבשלת הבירה של אביה בהארלם. רק לעיתים נדירות היא חתמה על עבודותיה בשמה המלא.

היא התמחה בסצנות ז'אנר ודמויות דיוקן, בדרך כלל של דמות אחת עד שלוש. הדמויות מפגינות לרוב שימחה ועליזות ומוצגות על רקע פשוט. רבים מהמצוירים הם ילדים. לייסטר הייתה חדשנית במיוחד בסצנות הז'אנר הביתיות שלה. אלה סצינות שקטות של נשים בבית, לעיתים קרובות עם נרות או פנס.[14]

חלק גדול מהעבודות האחרות שלה, בעיקר של מוזיקאים, דומות באופיין לתמונות זהות של בני דורה, כמו בעלה מולנייר, האחים פרנס ודירק הלס, יאן סטיין, הנדריק טרברגהן וחריט ואן הונתורסט. ציורי הז'אנר שלהם, בדרך כלל של טברנות וסצינות בידור אחרות, סיפקו את טעמם ואת תחומי העניין של מגזר הולך וגדל של מעמד הביניים ההולנדי. היא ציירה מעט דיוקנאות ממשיים, והציור ההיסטורי היחיד הידוע שלה הוא "דוד עם ראש גוליית" (1633), שאינו שונה מסגנון הדיוקן האופייני שלה, עם דמות יחידה קרובה לחזית התמונה.

לייסטר ופרנס הלס

אף על פי שהיא הייתה ידועה במהלך חייה ומוערכת על ידי בני דורה, לייסטר ויצירתה נשכחו לאחר מותה. היא התגלתה מחדש רק בשנת 1893, כשציור שהיה מזוהה למעלה ממאה שנה כיצירה של פרנס הלס הוכר כציור שלה.[15]

יודית לייסטר, הקונצרט, 1631–1633

הבלבול - או אולי ההונאה - התחילו עוד בחייה של לייסטר. סר לוק שחאוד רכש ציור של לייסטר, The Jolly Companions, כאילו זהו ציור של פרנס הלס עוד בימי חייה. העבודה הוצגה אצל סוחר אומנות, ורטהיימר מרחוב בונד, בלונדון, שתיאר אותה כאחד מציוריו הטובים ביותר של הלס.[16] סר ג'ון מילארס הסכים עם ורטהיימר לגבי האותנטיות והערך של הציור. ורטהיימר מכר את הציור לחברה אנגלית תמורת 4,500 לירה שטרלינג. המשרד הזה, בתורו, מכר את הציור כאילו הוא של הלס לברון שליכסטינג בפריז.

בשנת 1893 מצא הלובר את המונוגרמה של לייסטר תחת חתימתו המזויפת של הלס.[17][18] לא ברור מתי נוספה החתימה המזויפת. כאשר התגלתה החתימה המקורית, תבע הברון שליכסטינג את המשרד האנגלי, שבתורו ניסה לבטל את הרכישה ולקבל את כספו מגלריה ורטהיימר. התיק הוסדר בבית המשפט ב-31 במאי 1893, כאשר התובעים (המשרד האנגלי ללא שם) הסכימו לשמור את הציור בעלות של 3,500 ליש"ט + 500 ליש"ט הוצאות.

במהלך ההליכים המשפטיים לא התייחסו כלל ליצירה כגילוי בעל ערך במסגרת ההיסטוריה של האומנות. אף אחד לא גילה התלהבות כשגילו צייר אחר שהיה מסוגל לצייר כמו פרנס הלס במיטבו. גרסה אחרת של הציור הזה, נמכרה בבריסל בשנת 1890 ונשאה את חתימתה של לייסטר "ששונתה בגסות ל-FH שלובים".[17]

בשנת 1893 כתב קורנליס הופסטדה דה חרוטה את המאמר הראשון על לייסטר.[19] הוא ייחס לה שבעה ציורים, שישה מהם חתומים במונוגרמה הייחודית שלה 'JL *'. מאז היסטוריונים לאמנות התייחסו אליה פעמים רבות כחקיינית של הלס, אם כי גישה זו השתנתה מעט בסוף המאה ה-20.[20][21]

מלבד התביעה שהוזכרה לעיל, אופי היחסים המקצועיים של לייסטר עם פרנס הלס אינו ברור. ייתכן שהיא הייתה סטודנטית שלו או עמיתה. ייתכן שהלס או אחיו דירק היו המורים של לייסטר, בשל הדמיון הרב בין יצירותיהם.[1]
