אַלווין ניקוֹלָאיס (באנגלית: Alwin Nikolais;‏ 25 בנובמבר 1910 – 8 במאי 1993) היה כוריאוגרף, רקדן, מלחין, מוזיקאי, ומורה אמריקאי.[1] הוא הקים את "תיאטרון המחול ניקולאיס",[2] והיה ידוע בעיקר בזכות עיצוב התלבושות, התאורה ועיצוב הבמה החדשניים שלו.[3][4]

ראשית דרכו

ניקולאיס נולד בסאות'ינגטון, קונטיקט. הוא למד נגינה על פסנתר בגיל צעיר, והחל את הקריירה כִּמְבַצֵּעַ בתור נגן עוגב לליווי הקרנת סרטים אילמים. כאמן צעיר, צבר ניסיון בעיצוב נוף, משחק, תיאטרון בובות והלחנה. לאחר שצפה בהופעה של הרקדנית הגרמנייה מרי ויגמן, גמלה בו ההחלטה ללמוד מחול.

לראשית הכשרתו במחול זכה במכללת בנינגטון, מדמויות מפתח בעולם המחול המודרני: האניה הולם, מרתה גרהם, דוריס האמפרי, צ'ארלס ויידמן, לואיס הורסט, ואחרים.

קריירה

בשנת 1939, בשיתוף עם טרוּדָה קַשְׁמַן, מורתו הראשונה למחול מודרני,[1] קיבל ניקולאיס הזמנה ליצור בלט, ויצר את "קו בן שמונה עמודות", הבלט הראשון שלו.

לאחר שלימד שנתיים בסטודיו למחול משלו, והופיע ברחבי ארצות הברית עם הלהקה של האניה הולם,[1] שירת ניקולאיס בצבא ארצות הברית במהלך מלחמת העולם השנייה.[1] ניקולאיס עבר לניו יורק בעקבות המלחמה וחזר ללמוד אצל האניה הולם.[5] בהמשך הפך עוזרה של הולם, לימד בבית הספר שלה בניו יורק ובקולורדו קולג' במהלך הקיץ.

בשנת 1949 מונה ניקולאיס למנהל שותף של תיאטרון בשם Henry Street Settlement Playhouse, לצד בטי יאנג.[5] הוא הקים את הלהקה Playhouse Dance Company, שבהמשך החליפה את שמה ל"תיאטרון המחול ניקולאיס". באותו תיאטרון החל ניקולאיס לפתח סגנון משלו של תיאטרון מחול מופשט, תוך שהוא מציג את האדם כחלק מסביבה כוללת. ניקולאיס הגדיר מחדש את המחול כ"אמנות התנועה אשר, אם נעיין בה בזכות עצמה, הופכת למסר ולא רק למדיום". הוא קבע כי "ייעודה של האמנות הוא לחקור את המנגנונים הפנימיים ואת הממדים הנוספים של החיים, ומתוך החקירה, להגיש את ממצאיה מתורגמים למדיום האמנותי של האמן". באותה תקופה גם חבר לניקולאיס רקדן בשם מאריי לואיס, שעתיד היה להפוך לרקדן המוביל של ניקולאיס ולשותף יצירתי לאורך שנים.[5]

בשנת 1956 הוזמן תיאטרון המחול ניקולאיס להופעה ראשונה מני רבות בפסטיבל המחול האמריקאי. הופעות אלו, ומספר הופעות ב־The Steve Allen Show, תרמו לגיבוש תיאטרון המחול הכולל של ניקולאיס, והלהקה תפסה מקום בחזית המחול העכשווי האמריקאי. בשנות ה־60 של המאה ה־20, הוצגה שוב הכוריאוגרפיה שלו בטלוויזיה בשידור חי בתוכנית CBS Repertoire Workshop.[6]

בעקבות ביקור בכנס האגודה להנדסת אודיו באוקטובר 1964, גילה ניקולאיס את מערכת הסינתיסייזר האנלוגית הראשונה של Moog והזמין אותה מייד.

בשנת 1968 הופיעה להקתו במשך עונה אחת בפריז, בתיאטרון שאנז אליזה, מה שהגדיל את השפעת ניקולאיס על עולם המחול. בפריז החלה מערכת יחסים אמנותית ארוכה עם ה־Théâtre de la Ville, שהחלה בשנת 1971 ונמשכת גם לאחר מותו. לאחר העונה בפריז, החלה הלהקה להופיע ברחבי העולם.

לניקולאיס הוענקו חמישה תוארי דוקטור לשם כבוד; פעמיים זכה במלגת גוגנהיים, וקיבל מענק יצירה לשלוש שנים מקרן מלון.
