Walter Jonathan Andrew, nado en Derbyshire en 1859 e finado en 1934, foi un numismático e arqueólogo afeccionado británico.

Traxectoria

Primeiros anos e formación

Walter Jonathan Andrew naceu en Derbyshire en 1859, no seo dunha familia coñecida pola súa implicación en asuntos cívicos. Asistiu á escola de Rugby, Warwickshire, e titulouse como avogado en 1882.[1]

Aruqeoloxía e numismática

Á marxe do mundo do Dereito, Andrew tiña outros variados intereses, sinaladamente a arqueoloxía e a numismática. Formou parte do grupo de afeccionados á numismática que en 1903 fundaron a British Numismatic Society,[2] entidade da que foi o seu segundo presidente, entre 1909 e 1910,[3] e tamén foi elixido membro da Sociedade de Anticuarios de Londres, en 1902,[4] e do Hampshire Field Club and Archaeological Society.[1]

Como afeccionado á arqueoloxía participou na escavación na que se achou unha importante cunca saxoa en Oliver's Battery, Hampshire, hoxe depositada no Winchester City Museum. A partir de 1927, centrou o seu foco na descuberta da King John's House, un edificio medieval de pedra en Romsey, Hampshire,[5] da que logrou determinar, a través da investigación en rexistros, que fora construído polo rei Xoán I de Inglaterra e que posteriormente o seu fillo, Henrique III, llo concedera á abadía de Romsey. [1]

Outros intereses

Outros dos seus intereses eran a navegación en globo aerostático —recibiu a medalla de ouro da Balloon Society—, a historia natural —foi editor de honra da Derbyshire and Natural History Society— e o sendeirismo —pertenceu ao Manchester Pedestrian Club —. [1]
