Temisto (do grego: Θεμιστώ), tamén coñecida coma Xúpiter XVIII, é unha pequena lúa irregular de movemento directo de Xúpiter. Foi descuberta no ano 1975, deuse coma perdida, para ser recuperada no ano 2000.

Descubrimento e nome

Temisto foi descuberta por Charles T. Kowal e Elizabeth Roemer o 30 de setembro de 1975, o seu descubrimento foi anunciado o 3 de outubro de 1975,[3] e recibiu a designación provisional de S/1975 J 1. Pero como máis adiante non se puideron facer observacións para establece-la súa órbita, deuse coma 'perdida'.

Temisto aparecía nos anos 80 coma unha simple cita a pé de páxina. Todo cambiaría no 2000, un aparentemente novo satélite era descuberto por Scott S. Sheppard, David C. Jewitt, Yanga R. Fernández e Eugene A. Magnier, e foi designado provisionalmente coma S/2000 J 1. Ó pouco confirmaríase que este novo satélite era o mesmo obxecto co detectado no ano 1975. O anuncio do equipo de Sheppard [4] foi inmediatamente corroborado cunha observación do 6 de agosto do 2000 feita polo equipo de Brett J. Gladman, John J. Kavelaars, Jean-Marc Petit, Hans Scholl, Matthew J. Holman, Brian G. Marsden, Philip D. Nicholson e Joseph A. Burns — unha observación que foi enviada ó Centro de Planetas Menores -Minor Planet Center- pero que non foi publicada nunha circular do UAI (IAUC).[5]

En outubro do 2002 recibiría oficialmente o nome de Temisto[6], o seu nome provén dunha das 50 nereidas, aínda que algúns autores sinalan que é a filla do deus fluvial Inachus.

Características

Diagrama que ilustra a órbita de Temisto (arriba a esquerda) en relación con outros satélites irregulares de Xúpiter. Os satélites por riba do eixo horizontal son de movemento directo, e os que están por baixo son de movemento retrógrado. Os segmentos amarelos representan a excentricidade orbital que se estende dende o pericentro ó apocentro.

Temisto ten unha órbita infrecuente. Ó contrario ca meirande parte da lúas de Xúpiter, as cales orbitan en distintos grupos, Temisto orbita soa, a medio camiño entre as lúas de Galileo e o grupo de satélites Himalia.

Temisto ten uns 8 km en diámetro (asumindo un albedo de 0,04)[1]
