O erzya está clasificado como definitivamente en perigo polo Libro Vermello das Linguas Ameazadas da UNESCO[3]

A lingua erzya (эрзянь кель, eŕźań keĺ) é unha lingua urálica falada por 260.000 persoas nas zonas norte, leste e noroeste da República de Mordovia. Tamén é falada nas rexións adxacentes de Nizhniy Novgorod, Chuvashia, Penza, Samara, Saratov, Orenburg, Ulyanovsk, Tatarstan e Bashkortostan en Rusia. O erzya escríbese en cirílico sen modificacións á variante usada en ruso. En Mordovia, o erzya é co-oficial xunto co moksha e o ruso.

Pertence á pola mordovina da familia de linguas urálicas. O erzya está moi relacionado co moksha, mais diferénciase na fonética, na morfoloxía e no vocabulario.
