John Lee Hooker, nado en Clarksdale (Mississippi) o 22 de agosto de 1912 ou 1917[1] e finado en Los Altos (California) o 21 de xuño de 2001 foi un cantante e guitarrista de blues estadounidense.

Traxectoria

Infancia e mocidade

Crese que Hooker naceu en Tutwiler, Mississippi, en Tallahatchie County, aínda que algunha fontes din que o seu lugar de nacemento estaba preto de Clarksdale, en Coahoma County.[2] Era fillo do matrimonio formado por William Hooker e Minnie Ramsey. O seu pai ademais de traballar na granxa era pasor da igrexa baptista. Tivo seis irmáns e catro irmás.

De neno, a súa familia trasladouse a outra granxa nunha plantación bananeira próxima, onde coñeceu aos músicos de blues Snooky Pryor e Jimmy Rogers. En 1928 separáronse os seus pais e John foi o único irmán que quedou ao coidado da súa nai. Esta volveu casar co músico local de blues William Moore, que ensinou a John a tocar a guitarra cando tetiña trece anos.[3] Hooker contou posteriormente que grazas a el coñeceu de pequeno lendas como Blind Lemon Jefferson ou Charlie Patton, que ían de visita á súa casa.

En 1931 decidiu emigrar cara ao norte industrial, ao igual que facían outros afroamericanos do sur nesa época. Primeiro parou en Memphis, onde viviu na casa dunha tía, traballou en cines locais e tocou con Robert Lockwood. En 1935 trasladouse a Cincinnati, onde alternou traballos de limpabotas ou de acomodador en teatros con actuacións en grupos de gospel. Logo dun período no exército, instalouse en Detroit durante a segunda guerra mundial, en 1943, onde conseguiu un emprego na industria do automóbil, cun soldo que foi quen de completar cantando en bares de suburbios. Alí casou dúas veces. Coa súa segunda dona, Maude Mathis, tivo seis fillos.[4]

Carreira musical

A carreira musical de Hooker comezou en 1948 cando conseguiu o éxito co sinxelo "Boogie Chillen", cantado nun estilo medio falado que se converteu en característico.[2] Ritmicamente, a súa música era moi libre, característica que foi común entre os primeiros músicos acústicos de blues do delta. O seu fraseado non estaba tan atado aos estándares da maioría dos cantantes de blues. Este estilo informal e incoherente foise diluíndo coa aparición das bandas de blues eléctrico de Chicago mais, mesmo cando non tocaba só, Hooker mantivo o seu propio son.

En 1955 acabou o seu contrato con Modern Records e fichou pola compañía Vee Jay, de Chicago, que publicou os clásicos "Dimples" e "Boom Boom".[4]

Mantivo, non obstante, unha carreira en solitario, sendo sempre popular entre os afeccionados ao blues e ao folk de principios dos anos sesenta, o que lle valeu chegar tamén á audiencia branca.

Discos como Black Snake (1959), Wednesday Evening Blues (1960) ou Birmingham Blues (1963) afirmaron o seu prestixio a ambos os lados do Atlántico. En 1970 achegouse novamente ás correntes de moda ao gravar o álbum Hooker 'n' Heat coa banda Canned Heat.[4][5]

No ano 1977 John Lee fixo un concerto como invitado con Foghat e Paul Butterfield e en 1980, apareceu no filme Os Blues Brothers, interpretando o tema "Boom Boom" nun suburbio.

En 1989 chegou outro éxito cando, xunto con varias estrelas invitadas, incluíndo a Carlos Santana e a súa banda, Bonnie Raitt e Los Lobos, entre outros, gravou "The Healer", que gañou un premio Grammy.

Hooker gravou máis de cen discos e viviu os últimos anos da súa vida en San Francisco, onde tiña un club chamado o "Boom Boom Room", en referencia ao seu grande éxito.

Hooker faleceu mentres durmía o 21 de xuño de 2001 en Los Altos, California. Está enterrado na Chapel of the Chimes en Oakland, California.[6] Foi sobrevivido por oito fillos, dezanove netos e numerosos bisnetos.[7]
