O ireré viúvo[2] é unha especie de ave anseriforme da familia Anatidae e a subfamilia Anatinae.

Descrición

Mide uns 50 cm de longo. Ten unha envergadura de aproximadamente 90 cm e pode pesar ata 700 g.

A súa plumaxe é parecida en ambos os dous sexos.

Distribución

O ireré viúvo é natural de América e África. En América distribúese polo norte (Costa Rica e posiblemente Nicaragua) e practicamente todo o sur (Colombia, Venezuela, Illa Trinidad, a Güiana, a conca amazónica até o centro de Bolivia, Paraguai, Uruguai, Arxentina, Ecuador e o Perú). Hai rexistros para Chile, Cuba e República Dominicana.

En África ocupa a zona ecuatorial ao sur do deserto do Sáhara e polo oeste do continente, así como a illa de Madagascar. Existen rexistros en España e nas Illas Canarias (estes considéranse individuos perdidos).

Hábitat

Habita desde o nivel do mar até os 1000 m s. n. m.. É unha ave sedentaria. Desprázase segundo a abundancia de alimentación e o hábitat producido polas precipitacións. Vive en lagoas, lagos, campos cubertos de auga e ríos. Tamén se pode observar en estuarios e deltas. Busca lugares con pastos altos e beiras de pouca profundidade. É unha especie que non se pousa nas árbores; é común vela camiñando ou nadando.

Comportamento

É unha especie activa durante as horas crepusculares. Voa de noite e emite o seu típico canto, que di "sirirí", "sirirí". É gregario e é común que se desprace en grupos grandes, como a maioría dos anátidos. Adoitan ser grupos da mesma especie e doutros patos da familia.

Reprodución

Constrúe o niño no chan, entre as herbas altas ou nas ramas non moi altas das árbores. Ás veces pode aniñar en ocos de árbores. O niño adoita ter unha forma de cunca e está feito de herbas. Pon de 6 a 12 ovos; a incubación é levada a cabo por ambos os pais, tardando entre 26 e 30 días. Os pitos nacen cubertos de plumóns e son dunha tonalidade oliva escura, con manchas amarelas. Os pais permanecen xuntos participando no coidado das crías durante dous meses.

Alimentación

Aliméntase de plantas, sementes, pequenos invertebrados, moluscos, insectos e crustáceos. Come filtrando o seu alimento da auga, onde a profundidade é de poucos centímetros; pon o pico no lodo e realiza o filtrado con rapidez. Adoita mergullarse con facilidade.

Nome

O nome ireré tomouse do portugués brasileiro para nomear o xénero Dendrocygna.[3] Este, á súa vez, foi tomado do tupí.[3] É de orixe onomatopeica, xa que reproduce o son do seu chío.[4] Deste xeito, denomináronse o ireré caneleiro e o devandito ireré viúvo.[3]

En castelán é chamado suirirí (Perú e Bolivia) e sirirí (norte da Arxentina).
