Dalam geologi, pluton adalah tubuh batuan beku intrusif (yang disebut batuan plutonik) yang mengkristal dari magma yang perlahan mendingin di bawah permukaan bumi. Anggota pluton termasuk batolit, stok, dike, sill, Lakolit, lopolit, dan badan-badan igneous lainnya. Dalam praktiknya, "pluton" biasanya mengacu pada massa khas batuan beku, yang berdimensi beberapa kilometer, dan tanpa harus memiliki bentuk tabular seperti pada dike dan sill. Batolit umumnya adalah agregasi dari pluton. Yang termasuk contoh pluton adalah Cuillin, Cardinal peak, Gunung Kinabalu dan Stone Mountain.

Jenis batuan yang paling umum di pluton adalah granit, granodiorit, tonalit, monzonit dan kuarsa diorit. Umumnya pluton yang berwarna terang dan berbutir kasar disebut sebagai granitoid.

Etimologi

Istilah ini berasal dari Pluto, dewa klasik dari dunia bawah. Penggunaan nama dan konsepnya didasarkan pada permulaan ilmu geologi di akhir abad ke-18 dimana terjadi perdebatan antara plutonisme (atau vulkanisme), dengan Neptunisme mengenai asal mula basal.[citation needed]
