Hadrián I, nado en Roma e finado o 25 de decembro de 795, foi o 95º papa da Igrexa católica, de 772 a 795.

Traxectoría

Foi elixido papa o 1 de febreiro de 772.[1]

O seu pontificado, un dos máis longos da historia, iníciase tendo que facer fronte á invasión do rei longobardo Desiderio, para o que pediu, como o seu antecesor Estevo IV, axuda ao rei dos francos, o recentemente coroado Carlomagno.

Carlomagno, á fronte dun poderoso exército, entra en Italia en 773 e dirixiuse a Roma onde, en abril de 774, recoñeceu as doazóns territoriais que o seu pai, Pipino o Breve, realizara ao papado. A continuación dirixiuse a Pavia, a capital longobarda, que é tomada en xuño de 774 o que permite a Carlomagno enviar ao exilio, de Corbie (Francia), a Desiderio e autoproclamarse rei dos longobardos.

Durante o seu pontificado, Irene, nai do emperador Constantino VI convocou o Sétimo Concilio Ecuménico que se celebrou en Nicea en 787 e que baixo a presidencia dos legados papais restableceu o culto da imaxes condenando a iconoclasia e excomungando aos seus seguidores, co que se puxo fin á primeira crise iconoclasta iniciada polo emperador León III o Isáurico no 726.

Faleceu, logo de máis de vinte e tres anos de papado, o 25 de decembro de 795, sendo enterrado na Basílica de San Pedro.
