Auga pesada

Denomínase auga pesada a unha molécula de composición química equivalente á auga, na que os átomos de hidróxeno son substituídos por deuterio, un isótopo pesado do hidróxeno.

A fórmula química da auga deuterada, óxido de deuterio ou auga pesada é: D2O ou 2H2O. A fórmula química da auga triciada, auga de tricio ou auga superpesada é: T2O ou 3H2O. Esta forma é radioactiva. Ademais hai outras variedades isotópicas coma a auga semipesada con fórmula química HDO, DHO ou 1H2HO, e unha forma sen nome que corresponde a unha auga semisuperpesada, ás veces chamada auga tritiada, con fórmula química HTO, THO ou 1H3HO. Esta forma tamén é radioactiva. Tamén é de suma utilidade para detectores de neutrinos coma o kamiokande.

Propiedades

Moderador na fisión nuclear

A principal aplicación tecnolóxica da auga pesada foi de moderador nos procesos de fisión nuclear, polo que se converteu nunha substancia estratéxica durante o desenvolvemento dos primeiros reactores nucleares.

Durante a segunda Guerra Mundial, os aliados emprenderon un conxunto de accións directas para impedir o acceso dos nazis á auga pesada (Batalla da auga pesada). Hoxe perdeu parte da súa importancia, ó utilizarse tamén como moderadores nas centrais nucleares outros materiais coma a auga normal ou o grafito.

A auga pesada non está considerada como tóxica. Porén, algunhas reacción metabólicas precisan de auga clásica, é por isto que o consumo exclusivo de auga pesada pode ser considerado como perigoso para a saúde.
