Rangel Valchanov (en bulgare : Рангел Вълчанов), parfois orthographié Rangel Vulchanov[1], né le à Krivina (Elin Pelin) et mort le (à 84 ans), est un acteur et réalisateur de cinéma bulgare. Il a été élu meilleur réalisateur bulgare du XXe siècle[2].

Biographie

Rangel naît dans le village de Krivina, dans le district de Sofia. Il est diplômé de la Krastyo Sarafov National Academy for Theater and Film Arts en 1953. Il commence à travailler comme assistant réalisateur, avant de devenir réalisateur de films pour le cinéma. Il a travaillé en Tchécoslovaquie de 1970 à 1972.

Ses films les plus remarquables sont On a Small Island (1958), Sun and Shadow (1962), Judge and the Forest (1975), The Unknown Soldier's Patent Leather Shoes (1979), Whither Now? (1988). Son film Partir pour aller où a été projeté dans la section Un certain regard au Festival de Cannes en 1986[3] et a figuré sur la liste de la 15e édition du Festival international du film de Moscou.

Le , il est élu membre de l'Académie bulgare des sciences[1].

Il meurt d'un cancer le , âgé de 84 ans.
