Un hétérofullerène est un fullerène dont au moins l'un des atomes de carbone a été remplacé par un autre élément^[1]^,^[2]. Du bore (borafullerènes)^[3]^,^[4], de l'azote (azafullerènes)^[5]^,^[6], de l'oxygène^[7], de l'arsenic, du germanium^[8], du phosphore^[9], du silicium^[10]^,^[11], du fer, du cuivre, du nickel, du rhodium^[11]^,^[12] et de l'iridium^[11] ont été utilisés comme éléments de substitution pour former des hétérofullerènes.
