Ridda-sodat syntyivät islamilaisen historiankirjoituksen mukaan Arabian niemimaalla kun beduiiniheimot kapinoivat Medinan keskushallintoa vastaan profeetta Muhammadin kuoleman jälkeen vuonna 632. Tapahtuma nimettiin nimellä ridda eli islamista luopuminen. Tapahtuman historiallinen kuvaus ei perustu aikalaislähteisiin vaan myöhempään islamilaiseen perinteeseen.[1]

Sotien syntymisen tausta

Perinteisen islamilainen historiankirjoituksen mukaan useat beduiiniheimot kieltäytyivät maksamasta almuveroa Medinaan ja luopuivat islamista. Tämä käsitys syntyi 800-luvulla, kun islamin varhaishistoriaa kirjoitettiin uudestaan silloisten uskonnollisten näkemysten mukaan.[1] Jaakko Hämeen-Anttilan mukaan islam oli merkinnyt beduiiniheimoille poliittista liittolaissuhdetta Muhammadin hallinnon kanssa. Tämä suhde katsottiin päättyneeksi Muhammadin kuoltua. Itse islamista ei olisi luovuttu, vaan taustalla oli irtautuminen veronmaksusta Medinan keskushallinnolle.[1]

Sotien lopputulos

Sodat päättyivät nopeasti kun heimot pakotettiin Medinan keskusvallan alle ja beduiineistä tehtiin ainakin nimellisesti muslimeita. Ridda-sotien aikana Arabian niemimaalle syntyi kilpailevia profeettoja, ns. ridda-profeettoja. Perinteisen islamilaisen historiankäsityksen mukaan kyse oli Muhammadin jäljittelijöistä. Osa profeetoista aloitti toimintansa jo Muhammadin eläessä ja ehdotti hänelle jopa yhteistyötä. Luultavasti osa ridda-profeetoista katsoi vain jatkavansa Muhammadin työtä. Eräiden ridda-profeettojen, kuten Tulaihan, tiedetään "kääntyneen takaisin" islamiin ja eläneen kunnioitettuna muslimina.[1]

Historiantutkimuksen näkökulmia

Tiedot Ridda-sodista ovat islamilaista tarinaperinnettä, joka koottiin talteen 800- ja 900-luvuilla. Koska väliaika 600-luvun tapahtumiin on niin pitkä, tarinoilla ei ole historiallista lähdearvoa, ja Ridda-sotia on myös pidetty mielikuvituksen tuotteena.[2]
