Sarah Doudney (Portsea uhartea, Portsmouth, 1841eko urtarrilaren 15a – Oxford, 1926ko abenduaren 8a) ingeles idazle eta poeta izan zen, batez ere haur literatura eta erlijio-ereserkiak landu zituena.[1]
Bizitza
Doudneyren aitak kandela eta xaboia egiteko negozio bat zuen. Bere osaba David Alfred Doudney artzain ebanjelikoa zen, The Gospel Magazine eta Old Jonathan aldizkarien editorea.[1] Nesken eskola frantses batean ikasi zuen, eta haurtzaroan hasi zen poesia eta prosa idazten. 15 urte zituela idatzi eta 1864an Anglican Churchman's Family Magazine aldizkarian argitaratu zuen The Lesson of the Water-Mill abestia ezagun bihurtu zen Britainia Handian eta Estatu Batuetan.[2]
Doudneyren lehen eleberria, Under Grey Walls, 1871n argitaratu zen. 1872an kaleratutako Archie's Old Desk hirugarren eleberriari esker lortu zuen ospea. 1881eko erroldan, Doudneyk «hilabetekarietarako idazle» gisa deskribatu zuen bere burua.[3] Poesia eta fikziozko prosa idatzi zuen, besteak beste, Dickensen All the Year Round, Churchman's Shilling Magazine[1], Religious Tract Societyren Girl's Own Paper, The Sunday Magazine, Good Words eta The Quiver aldizkarietarako.[3] 1891n bere burua erroldan eleberrigile gisa deskribatu zuenerako, 35 eleberri inguru idatzi zituen.[3] Bere eleberri gehienak neska gazteentzat idatzi zituen, baina batzuk helduentzat ere. Idazlan askok amaiera tragikoa dute, baina heriotzaren ondorengo zoriontasunerako itxaropena uzten dute. Anna Cavaye, or, The Ugly Princess liburuaren protagonista, esaterako, hiltzen ari den haurra da, beste pertsona batzuk elkartu dituela jakitean kontsolatzen dena.[4]
Doudneyren ereserkien artean The Christian's Good Night dago, Ira D. Sankeyk 1884an moldatua eta Charles Spurgeonen hiletan abestua.[3]
Sarahren ama, Lucy Doudney, 1891n hil zen eta aita 1893an. Ondoren, Sarah Doudney Oxfordera joan zen bizitzera, eta han hil zen 1926ko abenduan.[3]
