Carletonville is 'n dorp in die weste van Gauteng bekend om sy goudmyne. Die gebied is een van die rykste goud-produserende gebiede ter wêreld. Die Mponeng-myn (bekend as Western Deep Levels-myn voor 1999[2] se operasionale diepte wissel tussen 3.16km en 3.84km diep, met verwagte uitbreidings wat die diepte tot so diep as 4.27km kan neem. Mponeng is tans die wêreld se diepste myn.[3]

Geskiedenis

Die dorp is deur verskeie mynmaatskappye ontwikkel vanaf 1937, en is vernoem na 'n bekende myndirekteur van Consolidated Gold Fields, Carleton Jones. Die dorp is 1948 geproklameer en het in 1959 munisipale status verkry.

Carletonville is tans deel van die Merafong City Plaaslike Munisipaliteit.

Hier woon 165 000 mense. Die dorp is net noord van die N12 nasionale pad.

Omgewing

Sowat 10 km oos van die dorp is die Wonderfontein wat die bron is van die Mooirivierloop, 'n sytak van die Mooirivier.
